The will remains free in its exercise, and yet yields itself to another will proceeding from without. Yet herein is something which deeply exercises me: in refusing to obey God, the will still obeys. Only that it obeys another master. F or three weeks, the southwest monsoon brought with it heavy rains, depriving us of three days of our weekly street meetings. It hath now been two weeks since the last public pleading; and had not my equipment failed me after getting drenched, I would gladly have continued even through those wet and troublesome days. But my gout also returned with greater pain, disabling me for a full week and some days besides. Thus, determined not to remain idle, I devoted myself to writing, finishing my appointed readings, and study. These were profitable employments, and I was thankful for them; yet the long inactivity from the public work brought my spirit very low. To be kept from that labor wherein my heart longs to spend itself is a peculiar trial of its own. Today was the first day of sunshine, and I knew not where to go. Thank you to those who prayed for this trip. This is a short video of our journey into a village we’ve never been to before. The Lord answered many prayers. Many doors were opened. We had one scheduled house visit with someone we previously met in our town, but God opened so many doors beyond that. I can’t count off the top of my head how many people we were able to speak to about the gospel. Many tracts were taken, several people asked for bibles, plus a few had us in their homes. Needless to say, going into villages and preaching the gospel in the open-air draws a lot of attention. Without the noise of the city, the sound carries throughout villages and can be heard by many. As opposed to “friendship evangelism”, which is no evangelism at all and is unbiblical, public outdoor preaching immediately leads to gospel conversations that otherwise would not happen. This is from a trip to a new village. There was a woman who, for a time, attended many of our street meetings. Then, under one particular message, the Lord was pleased to awaken her conscience concerning a sin she had long concealed. With much grief she confessed that, for eight years since she was in college, she had lived secretly with a man to whom she was not married. For years she had sought to quiet the accusations of conscience for the sake of the flesh, covering what she knew to be wrong beneath an outward profession of religion. Long hath she professed faith in Christ, whilst the man did not; yet he provided abundantly for her needs, and by these comforts persuaded her to remain. Thus what conscience condemned, convenience continually supplied with reasons to continue in sin. But when the Lord broke through those excuses, she could no longer remain as she was. M oreover, another man, much more gifted than either of these, was raised up of the Lord at this time, This was Rowland Hill. 23 August 1744 – 11 April 1833 During his days as an undergraduate at Cambridge University, Hill maintained a strong testimony for the Lord and gave leadership to a company of students in their Christian activities. These efforts brought the severe opposition of his father, Sir Rowland Hill, and led to the threat of expulsion by the University officials. But he remained firm in his stand and was encouraged by Lady Huntingdon and Whitefield. The latter wrote to him several times, the following letter written Dec. 27, 1766, being typical: I would not have you give way, no, not for a moment. ...Visiting the sick and imprisoned, and instructing the ignorant, are the very vitals of true and undefiled religion. W hitefield's other new helper was an army officer, Captain Scott. After receiving 'a polite education' Scott entered the army. He commanded a regiment of Dragoons in Europe during the Seven Years' War and was much affected by the carnage he witnessed.  Upon returning to England, while on a hunting party, he took refuge from a storm in a farmer's cottage and from its occupants he heard the Gospel for the first time. Then at the invitation of the farmer he went to the near-by village church to hear Romaine  preach and God made the message efficacious to the saving of his soul.  The Captain's new life was immediately manifest. He witnessed to his soldiers and before long, at the earnest request of a number of Christians, began to preach. This work was blessed of God and in 1766 John Fletcher said of him:  ... a bold soldier of Jesus Christ... . for some weeks he hath preached publicly at Leicester in the Methodist meeting-house, in his regimentals, to numerous c...

Perhaps it was not to be expected that there would be a constant supply of men who would perform the itinerant ministry and confront the mob and defy dangers as the Wesleys, Harris, Cennick, Humphreys, Adams, Whitefield and others had done. Nevertheless, new men were steadily being raised up of the Lord. Among the godly men who arose within the Evangelical Party in the Church of England there may be mentioned John Newton, the converted slave trader, Walter Shirley, a relative of lady Huntingdon, and Augustus Toplady, a scholar and poet. But these men did no itinerate and chose rather to devote themselves to devout and vigorous labours within their own parishes—labours that were rich in spiritual power and much bless of the Lord. W e notice also an event indicative of the prominence Whitefield had among the Church Evangelicals. Lord Dartmouth, a highly influential layman, frequently invited Evangelical clergyman to preach at the chapel in his country home near Cheltenham. He also endeavoured to have them, while in the area, preach in the parish church. At times the Rector allowed the use of his church but more often he refused it. Then, in November I757,  ... Madan came to Cheltenham, and was soon after joined by Venn and by Maddock ... Contrary to the expectations of Lord Dartmouth. both Madan and Venn were several times admitted to the parish pulpit. Then came Whitefield, and an immense crowd collected, expecting that he also would preach in the church. Attended by Lord and Lady Dart mouth... the renowned preacher proceeded to the church door. I judged it a matter of practical wisdom to preserve my own handwriting as a TrueType font, that it might one day be left unto my children as a small remembrance of their father. It is nowhere near impressive as my father's, it simply says I was here. In this I have often reflected with regret that I paid so little attention to my own father's beautiful handwriting whilst it was still before me. Even as a child I delighted to look upon it. There was a peculiar grace in its long sweeping strokes, its flowing tails, its broken spaces, and its stately capital letters. I once asked him why he did not write as other men did. A s my life draweth nearer its close, and the end appears more real than it did in the days of my strength, I find that every part of my life is being quietly altered. My prayers have passed from the continual presentation of my needs unto seasons of stillness, speechless wonder, and holy awe before the God of heaven and earth. The early hours of the morning have become at once the sweetest seasons of communion and the sharpest hours of spiritual conflict. There are few duties against which Satan directs himself with greater malice than prayer. He knoweth well that, when a believer is brought low before God, heaven is pleased to accomplish what all the powers of earth and hell cannot withstand.
