FAIR SUNSHINE

I have delayed writing this particular entry since the sixteenth of April, chiefly because I knew not what ought to be said concerning it. Yet as I now look back upon that day, I see that the Lord had His own purpose in it, though at the time it seemed ordinary and uncertain to me. On that day I encountered several members of the Watchtower sect who shared the same kiosk space wherein we frequently proclaim the gospel. There was a certain tension in the atmosphere, for though we occupied the same public place, we stood upon very different foundations concerning the truth of Christ. Yet I was reminded that error is not overcome through strife of flesh, but through patient witness unto the truth of God. The Word of God is the sword that pierces through the lies and deceptions of the enemy. No falsehood can long endure before the light of divine truth, for the counsel of men and the craft of Satan alike are brought to nothing when set against the living Word of God. I cannot explain it, yet there remained within me a quiet feeling that I must return unto this place today. On the former occasion I had made excuse and withheld the sowing of the Word, though afterward my conscience merely slept on it. There lingered upon my heart the sense that obedience had been delayed through fear and hesitation. Today I was constrained once more to go unto that place, yet this time the Lord showed me a quiet kindness through my wife, who graciously offered to accompany me. By her presence there was granted unto my heart a measure of calm which I had not known on former occasions. From those joyless years there grew within me a deep poverty of heart which I carried as a burden hidden wherever I went. In my youth I was bullied and wounded by others, and in college I gave myself over to rebellion, folly, and much anger. I withdrew from the fellowship of men, for I had learned to despise both my past, myself, and the company of others. So consumed was I by self-pity that I began to cherish my misery as though it were a crown. Human history is but a long, dusty trail of ruins left behind by the pride of man, a graveyard of empires where the hand of God has brought the lofty low and wiped the defiant from the face of the earth. It is a truth written in the blood of kings: pride is not merely a flaw, but a fatal poison. To harbor this sin is to guarantee a total and eternal separation from the Creator, for God resists the proud but giveth grace to the humble. We see this divine hand at work in the records of old. Nebuchadnezzar, the golden head of Babylon, walked in his palace and boasted of the "Great Babylon" he had built by the might of his own power (Daniel 4:30) . Matthew 21:23-46 / Mark 11:27-12:12 / Luke 20:1-19 "Tell us," the Pharisees arrogantly demanded, standing entitled in their own perceived righteousness, that Jesus should explain by what authority He performed His wonders. They sat as judges over the very Christ of God, determining in their biased minds to expose Him as an impostor, and somebody who is beneath them. So it is to this very day. Every audience present in the public proclamation of the Gospel assumes this same position of judgment. They size up the messenger as though he were a commoner, thinking whether what this fellow says is worth their attention, or if he is at least amusing enough to spare a few minutes of their vanity. The unregenerate soul looks upon the Truth not as a life-line to a drowning man, but as a curiosity to be measured against his own biases and the stubborn pride of his personal beliefs. Every true hearted Christian who tries to do good in the world, must make up his mind to be treated like his Master. He must never be surprised to find, that the self-righteous and the worldly-minded dislike his ways. He will be regarded as meddlesome, disorderly, and self-conceited, a pestilent fellow, and a troubler of Israel (Acts 24:5; 1 Kings 18:17) . Scripture-readers, district-visitors, lay-agents, and unordained missionaries, are specially liable to meet with such treatment. And worst of all they will often meet with enemies, where they ought to find friends.  Let all who are attacked by the world for trying to do good, take comfort in the thought that they are only drinking of the cup which Christ drank, Their Master in heaven sympathizes with them. We are but finite creatures, tethered to the testimony of our senses and dependent upon what our human faculties provide. Faith in the unseen is a concept foreign to our fallen nature; it is a seed planted in a soil that naturally rejects it. We find that we never possess enough of it, and while our days endure, we shall always stand in desperate need of more. It is difficult enough to trust in the things that we already see and perceive, yet who among the sons of Adam truly believes in that which is beyond our sight, much less in promises that are yet to be fulfilled? Our sight is short, and our hearts are prone to demand evidence, yet the Lord Jesus calls us to follow that path He walked that defies the evidence of the flesh. To believe without seeing is a work not of man, but of a sovereign grace that sustains the soul when the world offers nothing but shadows. May the Lord’s work in Dumaguete flourish through His redeemed saints who have taken a stand to bear the witness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ before the public. We share deeply in their joy, joining our spirits with them and all those who stand to proclaim the everlasting glories of Christ Jesus and the sure, righteous judgments of God against all sin and rebellion. There is a holy satisfaction in the public declaration of the testimony of the cross, the only refuge for the lost. As they stand before the public, let their hearts be strengthened by the knowledge that to partake in His suffering is to eventually partake in His glory. May the Spirit grant them a boldness that is tempered with humility and a persistence that remains unfazed by opposition. May the blessings of the Lord manifest in their obedience as they willingly share in His humiliation, advancing by nothing but in the power of the Holy Spirit.
