Then And Now

A snippet from an entry in my journal. August, 2018.

The trouble with my old self is that when the LORD should tell me, "Depart from me, ye cursed, I never knew you", I would have replied then, "but Lord, I spent my life preaching about Christ!" Whereas now I would simply say, "Amen. Righteous are your judgements, O LORD."

When we arrived at the park, our dear brother had already preached the Word. This pleased me greatly. The work had not waited for my coming; Christ was already being proclaimed. He afterward told me of a little encounter which had taken place whilst he was distributing materials amongst the people. Several Christians belonging to a particular church gathered around him and began asking what it was that he was giving away. Upon learning that he professed himself a believer, they did not immediately receive him as such, but began quietly examining him. Who is Christ? How is man saved? And so the questions continued. I confess, the account brought me much pleasure. These brethren were not satisfied merely because a stranger called himself a Christian and carried religious materials in his hands. Street Meeting Thirty Seventh

A dear brother, himself a fruit of the work, took it upon him this day to preach Christ in two separate places. I bless the L ORD for such zeal in men, and it rejoiceth me greatly to behold one who hath received the Word beginning himself to carry it unto others. Yet I have lived long enough not to expect more from such beginnings than is necessary. In this work the end is of greater consequence than the beginning. Many may begin with heat who afterward grow cold; and therefore, whilst I rejoice, I would rather pray than presume. May it please the LORD to bless this dear brother with brokenness, with need, and with emptiness. These are good markings of vessels fit for the Master's use: men who have learned that they possess nothing in themselves, and therefore must continually go unto Christ for everything. We have more than enough supposed men of God who have words, learning, reputation, and yet are void of power.  What we greatly need are men with the fire of the Holy...

T he Lord's Day is the most laborious and strenuous day of all the week for me. How differently did I once spend it! When we were yet in religion, our concern after the accustomed duties were ended was where the family should spend the remainder of the day, what cinema we should attend, or at which fine restaurant we should eat. Thus I thought to render somewhat unto God, and reserve the rest unto ourselves. I saw no great contradiction in it then. Having done those things which I accounted Christian, I persuaded myself that I had done God service, and the remaining hours might therefore be disposed of according to our own pleasure. I grievously decided what portion of the day God should receive, and was altogether insensible both to the command and to the duty of the day. Religion had received its portion, and self-indulgence might have what remained. How little did I understand that I was still my own master, even whilst imagining myself to be serving God. Journal Entry. The 5th of July, 2026th. 1:05AM I had always persuaded myself that to let go was impossible, until God was pleased to show me that it was not. Through all those years wherein I lived in sin, and even afterward, when the outward thing had ceased but the sin continued its life within my mind, this remembrance remained with me. Yet the LORD, in His own time, brought me unto a place of entire surrender; and I can truly say that I regret nothing which I surrendered there. Had the memory of it been some material thing which I could hold in my hands, I think I should long ago have cast it unto the sea, never to reach for it again. But it was not in my hands. It was in me. And there it clung like leprosy. It required the power of God to free both my heart and mind—not by causing me to forget, but by causing me to behold Christ as greater. The love of Christ toward little children is a thing beyond our measuring, and methinks beyond our telling also. Yet something of that same love constraineth His servants to bring these little ones unto the knowledge of Him, that they also might know there is a love more real, more enduring, and greater than all the troubles which this poor world can lay upon them. The place wherein the Lord hath appointed us to serve is poor, and in many respects broken. The children themselves bear something of this brokenness; and often, when I behold them, I am made sensible how very little we are able to do for them. Yet the little is ours to do; the multiplying belongeth unto God.  We may teach them, sit beside them, pray for them, show them kindness, and continually point them unto Christ. What I Know Not From Experience

Journal Entry. Twilight of October 11th.  I stood in a place where darkness and light dwelt together. There was no sound, no color, only light. The moment seemed to rob my senses of all that they knew, while at the same time taking in what of this was new, both what to me was known and what to me remained unknown. There was nothing behind, above, nor beneath, only what lay before me in the distance: light. Not light that one sees, but light that one knows. I knew what light was. I knew that it illuminated, and that when it was too bright, I could do nothing but close my eyes. But this was a light I had never experienced. So brilliant, burning brightly, and yet I found peace in looking upon it, in basking in it. I could not understand how a light so bright could be so restful to behold.
